A Guatemala City shooting over a traffic quarrel killed a manager at a state-owned Guatemalan bank on Wednesday, police said. Víctor Manuel Segundo Mazariegos Díaz, 42, was simply walking past when two bullets hit him in the back.
He died at the scene in zone 4, a district in the centre of the capital. For American visitors, the case is a reminder of why Washington tells travellers to reconsider trips to Guatemala because of crime.
How the Shooting Unfolded
Witnesses saw a driver in a white car arguing with a motorcyclist, according to the National Civil Police (PNC), Guatemala’s national force. The row was probably over traffic, according to the preliminary police report cited by the daily Prensa Libre.
The driver then pulled out a gun and fired at the motorcyclist, the police report said. The shots missed their target and struck Mazariegos Díaz, a pedestrian who had no part in the dispute.
Municipal firefighters tried to revive him with chest compressions, a heart monitor and intravenous drugs, but he died at the scene. The news site República reported that the attack took place in the morning outside Guatemala’s tourism agency, in front of dozens of people.
Who the Victim Was
Mazariegos Díaz was head of payment methods at Crédito Hipotecario Nacional (CHN), the state-owned bank whose name means National Mortgage Credit. República reported that he oversaw credit and debit cards, electronic channels and digital payment systems.
He had led projects to expand and modernise those services since 2022, according to República. After the Guatemala City shooting, the bank said in a note of mourning that “the CHN family is in mourning,” the daily La Hora reported.
Witnesses told the news site Soy502 that he was returning to his office after a work meeting. Witnesses quoted by La Hora said the motorcyclist worked as a home delivery rider.
Road Rage on Guatemala City Streets
The Guatemala City shooting has revived concern about violent tempers in the capital’s heavy traffic, Prensa Libre wrote. Emetra, Guatemala City’s municipal traffic police, had earlier counted three to five road confrontations each month.
Its communications director Amílcar Montejo told the paper in an earlier interview that officers had dealt with threats involving guns, knives and metal objects. Drivers in such incidents face fines of 500 to 5,000 quetzales (about US$65 to US$654), he said.
At about 7.64 quetzales to the US dollar on 15 October 2026, the top fine is worth less than US$700. Experts quoted by Prensa Libre link such outbursts to the stress, fatigue and frustration of long traffic jams.
What It Means for You
The US State Department rates Guatemala at Level 3, Reconsider Travel, in an advisory issued on 12 March 2026. It lists robbery, carjacking, assaults and murders among the crimes and says armed robbery is common after dark in cities.
Washington tells Americans not to travel to zone 18 of Guatemala City or to the city of Villa Nueva. In January two police officers were killed in zone 18, and on Monday a court jailed a man for more than 79 years.
Zone 4, scene of the Guatemala City shooting, is not on that list, yet the attack took place in broad daylight. Visitors who drive should avoid arguments with other road users, and people on foot should stay alert in busy central streets.
What Is Not Known
Police have not identified the driver who opened fire in the Guatemala City shooting or the motorcyclist he was aiming at. República reported that investigators and prosecutors from the Public Ministry (MP), Guatemala’s prosecution service, were reviewing security camera footage.
Witnesses quoted by the TV channel TN23 described a direct attack on him, while the police report speaks of stray bullets. Investigators are trying to establish whether Mazariegos Díaz was the real target or a chance victim, and no arrest had been reported by late Wednesday.
