The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has confirmed the killing of one of its officers and the serious injury of another following an attack by unidentified gunmen in Niger State.
The attack occurred at about 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, when two officers conducting a routine surveillance patrol along the Tunga Taya-Woro axis came under attack.
In a statement issued on Thursday and signed by the Service’s Public Relations Officer, DCI Akinsola Akinlabi, the NIS identified the deceased officer as Assistant Superintendent of Immigration I.U. Babangida.
His colleague, Inspector A.K. Musa, sustained serious injuries but escaped the attack and is currently receiving medical treatment.
The two officers were attached to the Service’s Wawa Control Post in the area.
The Immigration Service disclosed that Babangida had been buried in accordance with Islamic rites, describing his death as a loss to the organisation.
It also extended its condolences to his family, colleagues and loved ones, while wishing Musa a speedy recovery.

Security Agencies Begin Efforts To Track Gunmen
The NIS said it was collaborating with the Niger State Government and other relevant security agencies to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack.
It added that efforts were underway to ensure the perpetrators were brought to justice.
Despite the loss, the Service maintained that the incident would not deter it from carrying out its responsibilities.
The NIS reaffirmed its commitment to protecting Nigeria’s borders and continuing its operations despite the attack.
