South Korean robotics company T-Robotics has secured a U.S. patent for a key technology in the emerging glass substrate market, widely regarded as a potential game changer in next-generation semiconductor packaging. The company, which specializes in humanoid and industrial robots, announced on Oct. 21 that it had completed the U.S. patent registration process for its semiconductor glass substrate transfer robot technology.
The patent covers core technology for a device designed to precisely transfer semiconductor substrates inside a vacuum chamber. Having already registered related patents in South Korea and Japan, T-Robotics has further strengthened its intellectual property protection across major semiconductor markets with the latest U.S. patent.
The achievement builds on T-Robotics' successful application of vacuum robotics expertise developed in the display industry to semiconductor manufacturing processes. In particular, precision control of large substrates and vacuum transfer technologies developed for Gen 8.6 organic light-emitting diode (OLED) transfer robots laid the foundation for its glass substrate transfer robot.
Glass substrates are gaining attention as an advanced packaging material that could replace conventional organic substrates amid rapidly growing demand for artificial intelligence (AI) semiconductors and high-bandwidth memory (HBM). Their superior flatness and thermal stability make them well suited to high-performance chips, but manufacturing requires sophisticated automation technology capable of transporting the substrates reliably without causing damage.
The company is also pursuing patent applications for related technologies in China and Taiwan, further strengthening its intellectual property portfolio. By securing patent protection in major semiconductor-producing countries, T-Robotics aims to position itself for new business opportunities with global chipmakers and semiconductor equipment manufacturers.
Industry observers say the commercial success of glass substrate transfer robots will ultimately depend on proving their reliability in actual manufacturing processes. A semiconductor equipment industry source said precise positioning and minimizing substrate damage would be critical, adding that the next challenge would be developing customized solutions that meet each customer's process requirements based on the patented technology.
Founded in 2004, T-Robotics is a KOSDAQ-listed company that develops vacuum robots for semiconductor and display manufacturing, as well as autonomous mobile robots (AMRs). A company representative said growing demand for high-precision transfer technology, driven by the expansion of the AI semiconductor market, would prompt T-Robotics to actively respond to global customers' requirements and accelerate commercialization of its next-generation robotics business.
