Manchester United Weigh Michael Carrick Future as Julian Nagelsmann Emerges in Manager Search
Pressure is mounting at Old Trafford after a deeply troubling run of results, with Manchester United now moving closer to a point where contingency planning around Michael Carrick may become unavoidable. According to The Telegraph, the club have so far stood by their head coach, even through a sequence that has left serious questions hanging over the direction of the season.
The scale of the slump is stark. United have “supported Carrick, despite a disastrous start to the season with just two wins in 11 games in all competitions and none in their last seven fixtures, but that faith is now being tested.” Those numbers alone explain why outside expectation is growing around a possible change in the dugout.

Manchester United Begin Manager Search Planning
The report states that “the expectation from outside Old Trafford is that United will start to give serious consideration to their options in case the club are forced to sack Carrick and make a managerial change.” That wording matters. It points to a club not yet at the final decision, but one increasingly alive to the need for succession planning if results do not improve quickly.
There is also detail around the immediate aftermath of the latest setback, with “Carrick and the players arrived back at Manchester airport in the early hours of Thursday morning. He has not reported at the Carrington training ground today with the players off.” In situations like this, every movement is analysed and every absence invites further scrutiny.
Julian Nagelsmann Among Leading Candidates
One name has already moved to the front of the conversation. “Nagelsmann, who is currently out of work, is believed to be one of the leading candidates United would consider and Telegraph Sport can reveal that he would listen to a proposal from the club.” For Manchester United, that is a significant development. Availability, openness to talks and Premier League interest are all key factors when clubs assess managerial candidates mid-season.
The report adds that the 39-year-old “has previously been linked with United and speaks perfect English. He has been the subject of strong interest from Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea in the past, and is keen to work in the Premier League.” That profile, elite reputation, clear communication skills and long-standing interest in English football, makes him an obvious option if United decide a reset is required.
Our View
This is the kind of update that immediately grabs attention because it feels like the situation has shifted from background concern to active preparation. When a club of this size starts being linked this seriously with a coach like Julian Nagelsmann, it usually means the internal mood is becoming more fragile than public messaging suggests.
There is still part of me that wants Carrick to turn it around. He understands the club, he carries himself with dignity and it never feels good seeing another former United figure dragged towards the exit. But “just two wins in 11 games in all competitions and none in their last seven fixtures” is brutal reading. At some point, sentiment has to give way to reality.
Nagelsmann is the interesting bit. Young, modern, tactically flexible and clearly respected across Europe, he would represent a bold appointment. The line that he “would listen to a proposal from the club” is the one that stands out most, because it suggests United would not be wasting time if they made their move.
The worry, of course, is whether this squad is actually ready for any elite coach. A managerial change can sharpen standards and raise intensity, but it does not instantly fix structural flaws. Still, if the club are drifting, standing still is its own risk. If this run continues, the pressure may leave United with little choice but to act.
