Last night (Oct. 10), Rosalía was the musical guest with Shane Gillis as host on SNL. It was nice to see the angelic pop star return; she last performed on the show in March 2022 and joined Bad Bunny's performance in 2021. She sang "Reliquia" and "Magnolias" from her excellent 2025 album Lux. Both were absolutely stunning, especially the latter, during which rain began to fall while she performed, continuing an ongoing live act trend.
Gillis, who was hired for the SNL cast in 2019, but was fired before his first appearance amid backlash over racist old podcast remarks, had an eventful evening. He was also on set last weekend, where he met his beloved Turnstile, who he'd discussed on Joe Rogan's podcast in August. (Gillis mentioned Rogan in last night's monologue, but not Turnstile.) He said "fuck" during a Dr. Seuss sketch for the live East Coast broadcast.
Most of the time I think swearing is funny, but his hiccup genuinely made the sketch, which was already pretty good considering the show's inconsistent standards, even more engaging. In the scene, cast member Mikey Day played Gillis's easily scammed father, whom Gillis was trying to protect from the man attempting to force green eggs and ham on him. After the swearing hiccup, their characters started fighting, prompting Day to riff, "I want you out of this house. You're a loser," before adding, "And you said a bad word." A beautiful fourth-wall-breaking moment.
Gillis apologized for the mishap during the goodnights. A year ago on the show, Sabrina Carpenter didn't censor "fucked" either time during her "Nobody's Son" performance, but did not get flustered like Gillis because she's a pro (or did it on purpose).
There was also a pre-taped song sketch about clearing out your kid's room after she gets married to fill it with cool shit like a cardboard cut-out of Shaq, a life-size storm trooper, and a collection of House DVDs.
Rosalía also appeared in a sketch that featured Gillis stressed about staying with his dying mother because he wants to go see Jelly Roll and Teddy Swims at Sphere. Ben Marshall played Jelly Roll, Marcello Hernández was cool Jesus, and Rosalía appeared as a fresh divorcée who's "looking for a man to roll this jelly."
