By Zoila Palma: Minister of Foreign Affairs Francis Fonseca has reiterated Belize’s support for Taiwan following sanctions announced by China this week.
During an interview with 7News, Minister Fonseca said that Belize’s relationship with Taiwan remains strong.
“Our relationship with Taiwan continues to be very, very strong. As you know, you know, we… we just recently received the Foreign Minister of Taiwan on an official visit to Belize. During that visit, we signed a number of new agreements. We are currently, you know, negotiating a new economic cooperation agreement. So our relationship is very, very strong,” he said.
In addition, Minister Fonseca said that the Ministry received a note from the Chinese embassy in Jamaica which referenced the recent visit of Taiwan’s Foreign Affairs Minister to Belize.
“Clearly, we have, you know, the Prime Minister, as I said, delivered a very strong, forceful statement at the UN General Assembly speaking in support of Taiwan and their right to self-determination. And then, as you said, most recently, we had the visit of the Foreign Minister. So, you know, I think in their note-because they sent a note, we received today a note from… from their embassy in Jamaica to our protocol office… officer in Belize-it talked about that, you know, it referenced that… that visit and our receiving the Foreign Minister,” Fonseca explained.
