Margaret Qualley travels all over the world in her new heartbreaking Amazon romance movie, Love of Your Life, which began streaming on Prime Video today.
Directed by Rachel Morrison (also known for 2024’s The Fire Inside) and written by Julia Cox, Love of Your Life stars Margaret Qualley as Maya, a kind-hearted but closed-off nurse who finds herself swept off her feet by Charlie (Gabriel Basso). But this fairytale romance doesn’t come with a traditional happily ever after. Maya is forced to start over, and doesn’t know if she’ll ever be able to love life again… until she meets Felix (Aaron Pierre).
Yes, you will be crying when you watch this movie, but at least you’ll also get to enjoy some beautiful filming locations! Love of Your Life takes viewers across the globe to four different cities across three different countries. Read on to learn more about the Love of Your Life filming locations.
Where was the Love of Your Life movie filmed?
The Love of Your Life movie was filmed on location across four major different cities worldwide: Boston, Lisbon, London, and New Orleans.
Perhaps the most striking location in the film is Lisbon, Portugal, as well as the Algarve, the southern most coast of Portugal where Maya and Felix spend a blissful weekend at a beautiful beach hose.
In an interview for the Love of Your Life press notes, director Rachel Morrison reflected on the production’s time in Portugal.
“Lisbon and Algarve are enchanted places,” Morrison said. “We all felt incredibly fortunate to shoot in Portugal. It hasn’t been shot a lot before, so everywhere we looked, it felt brand-new. For me, as a cinematographer-turned-director, it was a complete gift to the visual craft of the film. Every wall you look at sparkles. Even the tiles on the ground shine. The sun is always perfectly low in the sky and there is so much that is magical about the light and the people.”
Specific locations in Lisbon include the Alfama neighborhood where Maya takes the iconic yellow tram, the Rossio railway station when Maya firsts arrives, and the Graça neighborhood where Maya wanders the streets.
In a recent interview with Decider, stars Margaret Qualley and Aaron Pierre also reflected on their time in Portugal while in production.
“Portugal was amazing,” Qualley told Decider. “We’d been filming in London for some time by the time we got to Portugal, and a lot of the crew came with us, so it was awesome to let them loose and jump in the water and get drunk and stuff. The food was amazing. It was beautiful.”
Pierre agreed, and added, “My sections of the film were London and Lisbon. I’m born and raised in London; I’m a London boy, so I loved being home. That’s my favorite place in the world. Lisbeth was just gorgeous; it was my first time there. I completely fell in love with Lisbon. The food is just out of this world.”
For the other locations, director Rachel Morrison wanted to highlight the clear visual difference between the cities on screen.
“Lisbon has shimmering sunlight and a saturated color palette, reminiscent at times of Cuba or South America,” Morrison said in an interview for the Love of Your Life press notes. “Whereas Boston and London have a more linear, analogue feeling. Todd [Banhazl, director of photography] and I talked a lot about which film stocks would best capture each city.”
For the locations in Massachusetts, filming locations included Boston, Cambridge, Concord and Lexington, according the Massachusetts Film Office. One specific site was the Washington Tower in Mount Auburn Cemeter, in Cambridge.
Director Rachel Morrison, who was born and raised in Cambridge, told the Boston Herald, “The craziest thing is that the scene where they climb up the Washington Tower in Mount Auburn Cemetery. My parents are both buried five minutes from there. As you can imagine, that was quite powerful because this film is ultimately quite personal in dealing with some of the loss that I myself experienced early on.”
As for the New Orleans leg of the production, specific filming locations included The Big Easy, a café, and The Columns Hotel on St. Charles Avenue.
In London, one filming location was the Sessions Arts Club, a private club located in a former Victorian-era courthouse, the former Middlesex Sessions House. It’s here that Maya catches up with her longtime friend Jason (played by Patrick Schwarzenegger), despite the fact that that scene is meant to take place in New Orleans.
That’s movie magic for you!
