General Election: Thursday, 5 November 2026
Voting is a right. Fair workplaces need employers and employees to play their part.
What the law requires: Representation of the People Act, Cap. 286A
- On polling day, every employer must allow every elector in their employ the prescribed period for voting. RPA s.83(1)
- No deduction may be made from the employee’s pay, and no penalty imposed, because of that absence. RPA s.83(1)
- Refusing or interfering with this time off, including by intimidation or undue influence: fine up to $5,000, up to two years’ imprisonment, or both. RPA s.83(2)
- Threatening harm or loss over whether or how someone votes is undue influence: up to $2,400, two years’ imprisonment, or both. RPA ss.90, 92
- No one may be discriminated against, disciplined or dismissed because of their political opinion. Employment Act ss.26, 74(2)(a)
For Employers: Recommended best practices
- Plan rosters early. Stagger shifts or breaks so every employee can vote, especially in shops, security, hospitality and essential services.
- Allow travel time. Many workers vote in a different constituency from where they work, including on Carriacou and Petite Martinique. Allow sufficient time for the journey and the queue
- Communicate clearly. Tell staff in writing, before polling day, when they may leave to vote and who to notify.
- Pay in full. Don’t deduct wages, require make-up hours or count voting time against leave.
- Stay neutral. Never tell staff how to vote, ask how they voted, or campaign at work.
- Release election workers. Support staff appointed as election officials or polling agents; agree their absence in advance
- No victimisation — before or after the election. Whatever the result, political opinion is never a valid reason for discipline, demotion or dismissal.
For Employees: Your part
- Check the voters’ list first. Before you request time off to vote, make sure your name is on the voters’ list. The list will also show your polling station.
- Time off to vote is time to vote. Once you have voted, please return to work promptly if a reasonable part of your shift remains, unless your employer agrees otherwise.
- Plan ahead. Polls are open from 6 am to 5 pm (RPA s.50). Agree your voting time with your supervisor in advance.
This advisory summarises legal obligations and good practice. To check the voters’ list or your polling station, contact the Parliamentary Elections Office.
