Sierra Leone will deploy troops to Haiti to support international efforts to tackle gang violence and help restore security in the Caribbean nation, Foreign Affairs Minister Mohamed Rahman Swaray has said.
Swaray made the disclosure during an interview with Truth Media on Tuesday, 13 October 2026, discussing Sierra Leone’s proposed contribution to international security efforts amid Haiti’s persistent crisis involving armed gangs.
The minister also addressed international cooperation and logistical support for the planned deployment, including coordination with partners such as the United Nations, the United States and France.
However, the precise nature of each partner’s commitment and whether all operational and logistical arrangements have been finalised were not clearly established in the available interview recording.
Earlier reports indicated that Sierra Leone was prepared to contribute 300 personnel, equivalent to two military companies, to international security operations in Haiti. The figure, however, has not been confirmed as the final deployment strength.
Haiti has continued to face serious security challenges linked to armed gangs, prompting international efforts to strengthen the country’s security institutions and support operations against criminal groups.
The United Nations-backed Gang Suppression Force is intended to help counter the threat posed by armed gangs and support efforts to restore stability. However, the force has faced challenges in securing sufficient personnel and logistical capacity to meet its operational targets.
A United Nations progress report covering April to August 2026 stated that 1,213 uniformed personnel from six countries had deployed to Haiti by 31 August, falling short of the force’s initial operational target of 1,500 personnel.
The report identified deployment delays and logistical constraints as key challenges affecting the force’s operations.
Sierra Leone’s proposed deployment would add to international efforts to address Haiti’s security crisis. However, the deployment date, final troop strength, operational responsibilities and details of funding and logistical support remain to be clarified.
Further details are expected from the relevant authorities as arrangements for Sierra Leone’s contribution progress.
