The San Francisco 49ers remain on a roll after Monday Night Football, cementing their mantle as the NFL’s ultimate team when it comes to getting the job done. It was a largely ugly 23-17 win over the Commanders, and for a while it appeared as though Washington was going to come back and steal one from the NFC West leaders. That didn’t come to pass, the 49ers are 6-0, and right now they’re not only the class of the NFC, but appear as if they could win the Lombardi Trophy this year.
There’s just so much to like about this 49ers team. Brock Purdy is playing the best football of his career under center, showing poise in the pocket, peerless decision-making, getting a pop from the receiving corps he hasn’t in recent years, and showing reall smart scrambling ability, where he’s picked up 16 first downs with his legs this year.
Christian McCaffrey’s usage rate has dropped, with him being on pace to finish with almost 100 fewer carries than a year ago, but this isn’t a bad thing. Purdy has been successful enough to flip the offensive script for San Francisco, with the pass no longer branching out of the run — but the inverse. This has preserved CMC from being hit too much, but he hasn’t lost his big-play effectiveness, on pace for 20 rushing touchdowns this season, which would exceed his 2025 touchdown total.
The 49ers are also a beast defensively. Raheem Morris has seamlessly fit in as defensive coordinator, leading San Francisco to become the 12th-ranked passing defense in the NFL and 7th against the run. While the team lacks a standout pass rusher, the entire defense is good enough by committee to make things work — and they epitomize the “bend, don’t break” ethos, which has led to make the 49ers rank 4th in points allowed this season.
All-in-all the Niners appear like a team who and seemingly nobody can stop them.
Well, one thing can stop them, and its been their biggest rival in the league for the past several years — bigger than the Seahawks, Rams, and Cardinals combined.
The now-infamous substation bordering the Niners’ practice facility is the ultimate MacGuffin blamed for the injuries that have kept San Francisco the bridesmaid in each of the last two seasons. Look, I don’t know if there’s honestly any substance to the idea that the substation is actually at fault, with everything I’ve read suggesting its far more pseudoscience and coincidence — with correlation not equaling causality. However, the substation is the perfect shorthand to discuss this team’s injury woes, which somehow keep getting worse.
Monday night may have given the 49ers the one blow they can’t bounce back from: an Achilles injury to receiver Mike Evans. While it appears the Niners dodged a major bullet with Evans’ tendon remaining intact, it’s believed he will miss time while he recovers, with an estimated return following San Francisco’s Week 8 bye. That’s assuming there are no lingering issues, recovery goes perfectly, and he can get back to form immediately.
Mike Shanahan’s most laudable trait as a coach is his ability to adjust to the hand he’s dealt, rather than let his team fail and make excuses after. Adjusting the injuries is nothing new for him, but when it comes to Mike Evans it might be the one injury Shanahan can’t mitigate.
This season Evans isn’t just the No. 1 target for Brock Purdy, but far and away the most reliable receiver he has. Boasting a success rate of 69.2%, Evans is the key engine to the entire 49ers passing offense. Success Rate for a receiver is a metric that evaluates the impact of each reception, with a “success” defined as gaining 40% of required yards on 1st down, 60% on 2nd down, and 100% on 3rd and 4th down.
We should view success rate as being synonymous with reliability or consistency. It’s about chain moving as much as anything else, and simply put: A 69.2% rate is obscene. A receiver having a solid season will be at or around the 50% mark, elite NFL receivers boast a success rate above 60%. This is consistent across the NFL. If we look at the league’s Top 15 receivers in yards, here are their associated success rates:
- Jaxon Smith-Njigba (SEA): 65.2%
- Chris Olave (NOR): 62.3%
- CeeDee Lamb (DAL): 55.1%
- Drake London (ATL): 57.4%
- Christian Watson (GNB): 52.1%
- Matthew Golden (GNB): 49.1%
- Malik Nabers (NYG): 50.8%
- Davante Adams (LAR): 57.1%
- Zay Flowers (BAL): 62.5%
- Tetairoa McMillan (CAR): 62.5%
- George Pickens (DAL): 53.8%
- Tee Higgins (CIN): 60.5%
- Mike Evans (SFO): 69.2%
- Garrett Wilson (NYJ): 56.3%
- Puka Nacua (LAR): 48.1%
Other players typically regarded as brilliant include Justin Jefferson (58.3%) and Ja’Marr Chase (60.5%). We’re seeing that Evans is significantly better than every receiver in the NFL when it comes to his success rate, which is a huge factor why Purdy has been such a good quarterback this season. Evans is making life very easy for his quarterback. This has been his modus operandi since entering the league, but it’s particularly pronounced this year. Prior to 2026 the best success rate Mike Evans ever had was with the Buccaneers in 2024, at 62.7%.
There’s no way to sugarcoat this one: As gifted as Shanny has been at coaching around adversity, Mike Evans is the single player he doesn’t have a way to coach around. Evans has been so good this season that this isn’t a case where San Francisco can dabble in the trade market and simply “find another receiver,” because another Mike Evans doesn’t exist anywhere else in the NFL. Any hopes of a Super Bowl this year for the 49ers hinges on their receiver returning from injury and back into form — it’s that simple.
