Greek Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis has strongly backed growing ties with Israel, labelling recent anti-Israel protests “antisemitic propaganda” with little impact on the government or the wider public.
His comments, made ahead of the launch of an Israel Allies Caucus in the Greek parliament, follow official condemnation of an anti-Israel rally held on the anniversary of the 7 October Hamas attack.
“Our public opinion has shifted dramatically to pro-Israel. We are almost an exception within the EU,” Georgiadis told JNS. He said demonstrations by leftist groups and migrants were rejected by most Greeks. “As a government we resist antisemitism, and as a society we resist antisemitism. Their propaganda does not influence us.”
Migration Minister Thanos Plevris added that Israel’s fight against terrorism was also a fight for the West.
The statements reflect deepening strategic cooperation between Israel, Greece and Cyprus on energy, defence and regional security, including a $3.5 billion air-defence agreement. Former Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and Israeli Ambassador Pninat Yanay also underscored the partnership.
