A 46-year-old Gauteng man accused of killing four people and injuring three others during a shooting in Katlehong North appeared before the Palmridge Magistrate's Court on Thursday.
Fani John Sibeko faces four counts of murder, three counts of attempted murder, as well as charges of discharging a firearm in a public place and failing to safeguard a firearm.
The charges stem from an alleged shooting incident that took place on October 13, 2026, when a group of African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) supporters was returning from a memorial service for the late Councillor Jeanese Magugu at Mogobeng Primary School.
According to reports, the group was walking and chanting when gunshots were heard from behind them. A man driving a motor vehicle allegedly approached the group, initially firing shots into the air before opening fire on the crowd.
National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Magaboke Mohlatlole said four people were killed in the shooting. They have been identified as Nqobile Faneli, 23, Njabulo Ngcongo, 23, Zanga Bingwa, 21, and Yonwaba Tunce, 27. Three other people sustained injuries.
Accused remains in custody as case is postponed
Mohlatlole said Sibeko handed himself over to the police following the incident and remains in custody.
He added that the case docket has been assigned to the Gauteng Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) for further investigation.
Meanwhile, the State requested a seven-day postponement to allow for further bail investigations. The matter was postponed to October 22, 2026.
“The NPA remains committed to ensuring that serious violent crimes are prosecuted effectively and that those alleged to be responsible are held accountable through the criminal justice process,” said Mohlatlole.
