The gym and weight system from GTA San Andreas is making a return in Grand Theft Auto 6. Both protagonists, Lucia and Jason, can stay in shape or let their bodies grow by not eating a healthy diet, depending on how you use this system. How does the weight and body system work, though? Let’s find out how the weight system works in GTA 6 to help maintain your body and fitness.
How Does the GTA 6 Gym and Weight System Work
Jason and Lucia’s bodies in GTA 6 can and will change depending on how you treat them. Without proper food, exercise, or sleep, both your GTA 6 protagonists may not be able to live up to their full potential. This is where the new GTA 6 weight System comes into play.
So, what affects your weight and fitness in GTA 6?
- Food affects weight gain (and the health bar), which can be controlled by working out
- Exercise builds muscles and allows Jason and Lucia to stay in shape
These are two of the three fundamental building blocks of the weight System in GTA 6. We’ve seen Lucia doing bench presses in the GTA 6 Extended Look, which was our first glimpse of how the gym and exercise system would work. There could be other exercises within the gym in GTA 6, including treadmill, weight lifting, and rowing. We will find out about the complete list of exercises once GTA 6 releases on November 19, 2026.

We also speculate that swimming, running, and wrestling could influence the weight system stats in GTA 6. We’ve seen CJ stay fit in San Andreas by running and cycling, so the same could be brought in here for our new protagonists.
Sleep, likely to be the third fitness stat, ensures your GTA 6 characters can function normally. Lack of sleep could have adverse effects on your character. It could lead to poor aim or blurry vision as a result of sleep deprivation. With GTA 6 locked at 30 FPS on console (possibly), having a blurry screen is the last thing you want to worry about during missions.
Given that the GTA 6 playthrough time potentially exceeds 80 hours, which could easily translate to months of in-game time, the Gym and Weight System won’t be a quick fix in GTA 6. Characters will not gain benefits from a single visit; it has to be consistent, much like real life.
How Food, Exercise, and Sleep Affect Jason and Lucia in GTA 6
Much like San Andreas, Lucia and Jason can gain weight if they eat too much or stop working out completely in GTA 6.
Eating too much can make them heavier, which could be reflected in the clothes that they wear. That said, you may need to store more than one set of clothes using the car trunk feature in GTA 6.
As part of the Gym and Weight System in GTA 6, working out can have several benefits. It can help tone muscles, make your character look more buff, and of course, allow them to eat more without gaining as much weight. This could, in turn, allow them to have larger health bars. This is currently speculated, and we will only be able to confirm this once the game is live.

As for sleep, a well-rested protagonist could get a small buff to stats. We’ve seen many video games that give players temporary boosts if they sleep for a certain number of hours. We don’t have to look far for examples, as Red Dead Redemption 2 has this feature. That said, sleep may even play into the weight system in GTA 6, affecting their fitness and ability to function.
Lack of sleep could make Jason and Lucia feel tired. They may not be able to work out effectively, which would in turn make it harder to stay fit. Thankfully, there’s a neat trick to avoid police car chases in GTA 6, which Jason and Lucia can make use of to head to a safehouse quicker and catch some Zs.
On the flip side, perhaps lack of sleep can only make them look tired, if not affect gameplay in GTA 6. After all, considering money is needed to progress GTA 6’s story, dealing with sleep deprivation (both in-game and in real life) wouldn’t be fun for players.
However, Rockstar Games may just introduce penalties for not sleeping for an extended duration; we don’t know yet.
Can You Make Jason and Lucia Overweight or Ripped in GTA 6?
Yes, depending on how you use the weight system, you can change Jason and Lucia’s body type in GTA 6 accordingly.
Since both protagonists are their own standalone characters, one may decide to hit the gym while the other scouts the heist location. Or maybe, they even travel using the GTA 6 Ryde Me taxi app instead of walking cause you’re feeling lazy. All of this will likely affect your fitness.
This also means that if you play a single protagonist for too long, the other protagonist ‘could’ get out of shape. Thankfully, you can call Jason or Lucia to meet up, and then hit the gym as a couple: not only improving your fitness but also your relationship in GTA 6.

At the time of writing, there’s no information on how ripped or how overweight each character can get. Rockstar Games has not given us all the information regarding the weight system in GTA 6 yet.
We are also not sure if players can deliberately reach a desired body type by repeatedly doing things that could shape that body type.
For instance, we have no idea what could happen if Jason eats 10 Prairie Sandwich Box Meals in a single sitting. Will it affect his body to an extreme and make him put on weight, or will he outright refuse to eat anymore when he’s full? We don’t know yet.
What we know, however, is that the GTA 6 map size compared to GTA 5 and RDR 2 is around two times bigger. Jason could probably walk off the 300,000 calories, eventually.
Does Weight Affect Gameplay in GTA 6?
Although the weight System in GTA 6 can change how Jason and Lucia look in-game, we aren’t sure if weight can affect gameplay. Looking at GTA San Andreas, we know CJ’s stats were affected based on his weight.
If CJ gained too much weight, he would lose stamina faster, whereas if he was in better shape, he’d be able to run for longer.

That said, it wouldn’t be too far-fetched to imagine Rockstar implementing body-type-based stats in GTA 6 to achieve life-like realism. After all, there is also a Criminal Profile in GTA 6 that will evolve based on what Lucia and/or Jason do.
The weight system in GTA 6 could be equally dynamic. Let us know your thoughts on the new gym, eating, and fitness mechanics. So, buff Lucia or Jason? Which direction are you taking?
