The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has issued notices to the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) and the Social Media Protection and Regulatory Authority on an application seeking to make both institutions parties to a case concerning children’s safety on social media.
The IHC chief justice issued notices to both institutions following the request to include them in the proceedings.
The petition seeks a comprehensive legal and regulatory framework to protect children from online risks, including a ban on social media accounts for children under 16, effective age verification and measures to ensure parental supervision of children’s online activities.
The applicant has also asked the court to examine whether NADRA could establish a secure and effective age verification system. The proposed inclusion of the Social Media Protection and Regulatory Authority is intended to help address platform accountability, personal data protection and effective complaint redressal mechanisms.
The petition highlights risks faced by children online, including cyberbullying, harassment, sexual exploitation, exposure to inappropriate content and digital addiction. It calls on the state to take measures to protect children’s best interests, mental health, privacy and dignity, with stronger safeguards for minors using social media platforms.
