By Zoila Palma: Former Chihuahua Attorney General César Jáuregui has been arrested on suspicion of treason after Mexican authorities alleged that he allowed U.S. personnel to participate in a drug raid without the authorization required under Mexican law.
Mexican Attorney General Ernestina Godoy announced the arrest on Saturday, following months of investigation.
According to Reuters, prosecutors allege that Jáuregui authorized U.S. agents to participate in an “irregular” raid on a suspected drug laboratory in April in Chihuahua, a northern Mexican state bordering the United States.
Godoy said the investigation found that he may have allowed foreign personnel to take part in operations reserved exclusively for Mexico’s national security forces.
The case has heightened sensitivities surrounding U.S. involvement in Mexican security operations.
In April, the United States confirmed that two employees of its embassy in Mexico City had died, without identifying their agencies. Sources familiar with the matter said the two were CIA officers involved in anti-narcotics efforts.
President Claudia Sheinbaum has maintained that Mexico welcomes intelligence sharing and bilateral cooperation against organized crime but does not permit U.S. agents or forces to participate directly in operations on Mexican territory.
