KUALA LUMPUR: The government has settled RM17.15 billion in excess tax refunds involving 3.23 million taxpayer cases as at Sept 30, 2026.
In a written reply published on Parliament's website today, the Finance Ministry said RM6.38 billion had been refunded to 3.1 million individual taxpayers, while RM8.95 billion went to more than 130,000 corporate taxpayers, including micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
The ministry said the Inland Revenue Board had implemented measures to improve tax refund processing, including allocating refunds based on the age of outstanding cases and prioritising MSMEs and companies facing cash flow difficulties.
"The government is also committed to ensuring that outstanding refunds are fully settled promptly as part of efforts to enhance tax administration efficiency and safeguard taxpayers' rights, in line with the Madani government's fiscal reform agenda," it said.
The ministry was responding to a question from Lim Guan Eng (Bagan-PH) on the timeframe for settling excess tax refunds and the two per cent compensation for corporate taxpayers for the 2025 year of assessment.
He also sought details on outstanding refunds by year of assessment and the number of affected taxpayers.
