Overview:
Cybersecurity analyst jobs are projected to grow 29% from 2024 to 2034, creating strong career opportunities.
AI, cloud security and risk assessment rank among the most sought-after skills for cybersecurity professionals.
Certifications such as Security+, CISSP and CISA can strengthen job applications when combined with practical experience.
Every company that stores customer data now needs trained people who can protect that data from constant attacks. Security teams once sat quietly inside the IT department, and company boards rarely asked about their work.
Today, leaders review cyber risk in regular meetings, and hiring plans now follow that closer attention. People who enter this field in 2027 will find steady demand and fairly good pay.
Official numbers from the United States government back up this positive view of the job market. The Bureau of Labor Statistics expects jobs for information security analysts to grow 29% from 2024 to 2034. Growth across all occupations is projected at only about 3% over the same ten years. Employers also say they need sharper skills, so this guide covers paths, skills, and certifications worth learning.
Why Security Hiring Keeps Growing
Pay and Job Numbers
The BLS lists a median yearly wage of USD 124,910 for information security analysts as of May 2024. About 182,800 people held this job in 2024, and roughly 16,000 openings arise each year. CyberSeek data reported by NIST counts 514,359 open cybersecurity positions nationwide, which is a 12% increase over the earlier period.
What the ISC2 Study Found
The 2025 ISC2 Cybersecurity Workforce Study surveyed more than 16,000 security professionals and decision-makers worldwide. Skills gaps now worry employers more than staff numbers, so ISC2 skipped its usual global shortage estimate. Overall, 95% of respondents reported at least one skills gap, and only 5% reported none. Around 59% called those gaps critical or significant, which is up sharply from 44% in 2024.
Top Career Paths for 2027
Security teams now hire for focused roles instead of asking one general expert to handle every task. The table below lists five common paths and the certification often linked with each one.
Which Path Fits Which Person
Security analysts suit people who enjoy watching systems closely and making careful decisions when alerts arrive.
Penetration testers suit people who like technical puzzles and want to think the way an attacker thinks.
Governance, risk, and compliance (GRC) roles suit people who write clearly and enjoy working with auditors and policy.
Cloud security roles suit engineers who already know servers, networks, and the access controls that protect them.

Skills Employers Want Most
Technical Skills in Demand
ISC2 asked security teams to name the technical skills they lack most, and the leading answers are listed below.
AI: 41%
Cloud security: 36%
Risk assessment: 29%
Application security: 28%
GRC and security engineering: 27% each
AI has ranked among the top needs for two years, and most professionals see it as a chance to grow. About 73% of respondents believe AI will create more specialized security skills, and 69% are integrating, testing, or evaluating it.
Soft Skills that Matter
Technical skills get a candidate noticed, yet clear communication helps people move into senior roles later. Analysts must explain risks in plain language to managers who do not work in technology.
Certifications Employers Ask For
CyberSeek tracks how often US job ads name each credential, and these counts cover May 2024 to April 2025.
CISSP: 82,494 listings
Security+: 70,019 listings
CISA: 52,337 listings
CISM: 44,347 listings
GIAC: 41,070 listings
A Simple Order to Follow
Beginners can start with Security+ to learn core security topics, common tools, and basic risk ideas. After that, CySA+ suits defense work, while OSCP suits people who want to test systems as attackers. CISSP fits senior professionals who already have several years of hands-on experience in the field. A certificate gets an application noticed, yet labs and real projects show what a candidate can do.
How to Start Your Plan
Pick one career path first and learn the main tools that people in that role use every day.
Practice in a home lab or join online capture-the-flag events to build experience that employers can actually see.
Earn one entry-level certification before moving on to the advanced credentials, which cost more and need more experience.
Learn the basics of AI and cloud platforms early, since both rank among the biggest skills gaps.
Preparing for a Cybersecurity Career
Cybersecurity offers steady work, solid pay, and a clear purpose for people who like solving problems. Government forecasts, employer surveys, and live job postings all point toward continued growth in the coming years. Demand for skilled defenders should stay strong through 2027, and the shortage of specific skills may last longer.
Success will favor people who keep learning even after they land their first security job. A focused path, one recognized certification, and regular lab practice create a strong base for a long career.
Candidates who add AI and cloud knowledge will look more useful when employers compare similar resumes. Starting early gives these candidates a real advantage in a field that rewards steady preparation and practice.
