The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) says it will begin the controlled demolition of the distressed Great Nigeria Insurance House on Lagos Island on Thursday.
Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, a permanent secretary at LASEMA, disclosed this in a public safety advisory issued to residents, traders, motorists and the general public on Wednesday.
Mr Oke-Osanyintolu said the demolition was approved following structural assessments by relevant agencies, which confirmed that the building posed a significant risk to public safety.
He said the exercise would be carried out professionally and in line with global best practices to prevent incidents and protect lives and property. According to the advisory, the immediate surroundings of the building would be cordoned off, with access restricted throughout the demolition exercise.
Mr Oke-Osanyintolu said temporary traffic diversions would also be introduced on adjoining streets to ensure public safety and maintain traffic flow. He warned that the operation might generate noise and dust, appealing to residents and businesses in the neighbourhood for understanding.
Mr Oke-Osanyintolu urged motorists and other road users to avoid the affected area where possible, use alternative routes and comply with instructions from emergency responders and traffic management officials.
Mr Oke-Osanyintolu said the agency would collaborate with other relevant state agencies to coordinate safety arrangements and ensure the exercise runs smoothly.
He appealed to residents, traders and motorists to cooperate with officials throughout the operation.
