The Cleveland Guardians and Tampa Bay Rays will have to wait a day to continue the American League Championship Series after Game 4 was postponeddue to rain in Cleveland.
The teams were set to face off Friday night at Progressive Field with an 8 p.m. ET first pitch. However, rain started coming down before the game and didn't let up. An hour before the game was supposed to start, MLB announced a rain delay. The grounds crew attempted to clean up the field by squeegeeing the warning track, but the tarp went back on as the rain kept falling.
About an hour after Shawn Armstrong was supposed to take the mound for Cleveland, the league decided to push the game back. The postponement affects Game 4 and Game 5 with the Guardians up 2-1.
Guardians manager Stephen Vogt expressed disappointment in the postponement.
"This is baseball. This is Cleveland. We're more than used to these kinds of days," he said, per USA TODAY Sports' Bob Nightengale.
Vogt's Tampa Bay counterpart, Kevin Cash, shared some thoughts as well, saying he was "not frustrated at all."
"The rain just didn't change. It never really cleared out the way they were hoping and it started getting later in the hour," he said, per reporter Ryan Bass. "MLB and I think both clubs did everything they could to try to get it in. It made the most sense at this point in this hour with no guarantee that there wasn't another band coming."
