The discoveries include sea cucumbers, corals and tiny crustaceans, highlighting the biodiversity of the deep ocean. Researchers from Latin America and Europe analysed specimens from a 2025 expedition, expanding knowledge of South Atlantic marine ecosystems.
Among the discoveries is a horned sea cucumber nicknamed Loki, found more than 2,500 metres underwater. The research team identified 20 new copepod species, 22 echinoderms, 14 cnidarians and one mollusc.
The canyon extends beyond 3,500 metres in depth, where warm and cold ocean currents meet. Another expedition is planned for early 2027 to investigate a different submarine canyon.
