Police have rescued a Chattogram businessman who was abducted by individuals posing as Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) members and arrested six people, including the alleged ringleader, a former army and RAB member.
Mohammad Ehsan, 36, was rescued unharmed from the Ali Khali Rohingya camp area, also known as Leda Camp-25, in Teknaf, Cox's Bazar, today (21 October), police said.
Chattogram District Superintendent of Police Md Masud Alam told The Business Standard that police had been investigating the abduction for the past three to four days after a video showing Ehsan being taken away from Prem Bazar in Puichhari Union went viral.
The abductors initially demanded a ransom but later stopped making demands, the police superintendent said.
The six arrested include alleged ringleader Sumon Munshi, a former army and RAB member, and Mizanur Rahman, 29; Zainal Uddin, 28; Md Abbas Uddin, 31; Md Solim, also known as Selim, 30; and Delwar Hossain, 40.
Masud Alam said further details about the arrests would be disclosed later.
According to police, Ehsan was abducted from his business premises in Prem Bazar at around 8:30pm on 17 October.
Sumon Munshi and five to six unidentified accomplices allegedly took him away while wearing RAB uniforms.
The abductors later contacted Ehsan's wife and his shop manager, Mozaffar Uddin, from several mobile phone numbers, demanding Tk20 lakh as ransom. They also threatened to kill Ehsan if the money was not paid.
A case was filed with Banshkhali Police Station on 19 October. The case number is 27.
Ehsan is from Prem Bazar in Puichhari Union, Banshkhali, and is the second son of Haji Nurul Kabir of Teliakata village in the same area.
He returned to Bangladesh after running a business in Mozambique, South Africa, for 12 years and has since been operating four businesses locally.
