The United States has raised its travel advisory for Kenya from Level 2 to Level 3, warning American citizens about terrorism, kidnapping, violent crime, and health risks linked to the Ebola outbreak.
The U.S. Department of State announced the change on Monday, October 19, urging Americans to reconsider travel to Kenya due to security and health concerns.
The advisory seen by Kenyans.co.ke warned of possible terrorist attacks, including bombings, grenade attacks, armed assaults and kidnappings, with potential targets including government buildings, hotels, tourist destinations, transport hubs, shopping malls, markets and places of worship.
“The Department of State increased its Travel Advisory for Kenya from Level 2 (Exercise Increased Caution) to Level 3 (Reconsider Travel),” the advisory read in part.

At the same time, Washington has also maintained its highest Level 4 travel warning for specific areas, including Eastleigh and Kibera in Nairobi, parts of the northeastern and coastal regions, and designated areas of West Pokot, Turkana and Marsabit counties.
The travel warning comes as Kenya deals with an outbreak of Ebola Bundibugyo virus disease linked to cases originating in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
As of October 19, Kenya had confirmed eight Ebola cases following infections among people linked to the first patient.
The latest case involved a 49-year-old hospital attendant suspected of exposure while handling the patient's utensils and linens.
Additionally, the U.S. advisory warned of dangerous driving conditions and traffic accidents, urging travellers to exercise caution on Kenyan roads.
On crime, the department cites armed carjackings, robberies, home invasions, sexual assaults and kidnappings for ransom.
The U.S. has also warned that demonstrations and political or economic protests can turn violent and disrupt major roads.
Americans travelling to Kenya have been advised to monitor local news, avoid demonstrations and crowds, remain alert in public places and maintain emergency communication plans.
