Greek police are investigating the burial of a 79-year-old woman in the garden of her family home in Amaliada, western Greece, after two of her sons reportedly buried her there, saying they could not afford funeral expenses.
The case emerged on Tuesday evening, October 20, after the woman’s third son, who lives in Athens, filed a complaint with the police department responsible for investigating and solving crimes in Ilida. According to local news outlet Ilialive.gr, he had not received clear answers about what had happened to his mother and wanted her to have a conventional funeral and burial in a cemetery.
The three brothers had been living in their family home with their elderly mother, who had health problems. The 79-year-old died on Monday, October 19. Following her death, two of her sons buried her in the garden, citing their inability to pay for a traditional funeral.

The police investigation remains ongoing, with the findings of the forensic examination expected to help clarify the case.
