Nairobi - Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka has honoured the young Kenyans who participated in the June 25, 2024, anti-Finance Bill protests, paying tribute to those who died and the families left behind.
Speaking in a Mashujaa Day message on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, the former Vice President described the protesters as national heroes, saying their bravery and commitment to the country would remain a permanent part of Kenya's history.
Kalonzo's tribute to the protesters
Kalonzo recalled how young Kenyans took to the streets carrying Kenyan flags, water bottles and mobile phones as they opposed the controversial Finance Bill 2024. He said the images of those marchers captured a generation willing to stand up for constitutional rights at great personal cost.
The Wiper Patriotic Front leader also turned his attention to the families of those who did not survive the demonstrations, acknowledging that many parents continued to live with the grief of losing children who had gone out to hold their government to account.
"Today, we remember the young people who walked out on June 25, 2024, with nothing but a Kenyan flag, a bottle of water and a phone in their hands. We remember the parents whose children never came home, simply because they stood up for what the Constitution promised them. Their courage, sacrifice and love for this nation will never be forgotten. They are, and will forever remain, our heroes. Happy Mashujaa Day, Kenya!" Kalonzo said.
Mashujaa Day significance
Mashujaa Day, observed annually on October 20, is a national holiday in Kenya dedicated to recognising the courage and sacrifice of those who contributed to the country's freedom and progress.
Kalonzo's decision to use the occasion to honour the 2024 protest generation reflects the enduring political significance of the demonstrations, which led to the withdrawal of the Finance Bill 2024 following widespread public opposition and the deaths of several protesters.
