At 16, Elijah Buckwald received Scouting America’s Honor Medal for lifesaving heroism after helping rescue an elderly couple.
Some moments leave little time for hesitation. For Elijah Buckwald, a routine drive through Oregon’s Santiam Pass became one of those moments when, at just 14, he found himself standing on an overturned pickup truck, helping strangers trapped inside after a serious crash.
Two years later, that instinct to step forward has earned the Redmond teenager national recognition, states an online report by KTVZ21 News.
A crash on Santiam Pass
According to the report, in August 2024, Buckwald was travelling with his grandparents near the summit of Santiam Pass when they encountered an overturned pickup truck and camper trailer blocking the highway. Inside the wreckage was an elderly couple who needed help. With emergency responders yet to arrive, Buckwald got out to assess the situation.
He climbed onto the overturned pickup, reached the passenger side and opened the door. He then held it in place while other adults worked to get the couple safely out of the vehicle. The quick response helped create an opening for the trapped occupants to be brought to safety. Despite the severity of the crash, neither person was injured. For Buckwald, who was only 14 at the time, the situation called for action rather than waiting for someone else to take charge, adds the online report.
Recognition for a lifesaving act
Now 16 and a member of Scout Troop 25, Buckwald has been recognised with Scouting America’s prestigious Honor Medal, a national award presented to Scouts and adult leaders for acts of heroism and lifesaving service, also adds the report. The honour places his actions on Santiam Pass among the organisation’s recognised examples of courage and preparedness. It also highlights how skills developed through Scouting can become valuable in unexpected, real-world emergencies.Buckwald’s actions were carried out before professional first responders reached the scene, making his willingness to help particularly significant, informs the report too.
When training meets instinct
The incident has also become a point of pride for Buckwald’s troop, where preparedness and service are central parts of the Scouting experience. His actions demonstrated how training can translate into calm decision-making when circumstances suddenly become dangerous. What began as an ordinary journey with his grandparents ultimately became a defining moment for the teenager. At an age when most people might have stood back and waited for help, Buckwald moved towards the overturned vehicle and helped make a dangerous situation safer. His recognition two years later serves as a reminder that heroism does not always arrive with dramatic gestures.Images Courtesy: Facebook and KTVZ21 News
