Manchester United face growing behind-the-scenes pressure after Lisandro Martinez openly criticized the club’s recruitment plans following their 2-0 Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid.
According to talkSPORT, several senior Manchester United players share the defender’s frustration with the club hierarchy, particularly sporting director Jason Wilcox.
Martinez spoke to Amazon Prime after Tuesday’s match at the Metropolitano and questioned why United had failed to strengthen several areas of the squad. His comments have increased pressure on manager Michael Carrick after a difficult start to the campaign.
The defeat also raised fresh questions about United’s summer recruitment strategy, with concerns over the lack of defensive cover and the club’s ability to compete against Europe’s leading teams.
Manchester United Players Share Lisandro Martinez’s Frustration
Martinez did not hide his disappointment after Manchester United’s 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid. The Argentine defender criticised the performance and suggested the result reflected wider problems within the club.
“It was really poor, really poor,” Martinez told Amazon Prime. “I have to control myself a lot. But sometimes it’s a reflection of our club at the moment. We did it last season and now we expect more from the top.”
The defender also questioned the club’s transfer decisions and called for more investment to help United compete at the highest level.
“To bring more players, to compete. Other teams bring in many more players. I expect more from everyone… 100 per cent I expected more from our technical director,” he said.
Martinez accepted that the players also needed to improve but stressed the importance of building a strong squad.
“Last season we created a base to build an amazing team. It’s annoying and disappointing to come here and I’m not seeing my team get an amazing result here,” he added.
According to talkSPORT, several senior Manchester United players share Martinez’s concerns about the club’s recruitment strategy and the team’s direction.
Manchester United Face Questions Over Jason Wilcox’s Transfer Plans
The criticism has placed Wilcox under greater scrutiny, with concerns over United’s decision to focus much of their summer spending on midfield reinforcements.
The club brought in three major midfield signings, but other areas of the squad received less attention. Defensive depth has become a concern, particularly with injuries affecting several players.
TalkSPORT chief football anchor Adrian Durham supported Martinez’s criticism and questioned why United failed to strengthen their defence.
“He’s absolutely spot on,” Durham said. “The hierarchy needed to do a lot more in the summer.”
Durham pointed to the lack of a backup left-back, Luke Shaw’s injury problems and the inexperience of young centre-backs Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven.
He also questioned whether Harry Maguire remained at the required level and noted that Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt had both suffered injuries.
“They didn’t reinforce at the back. Did they need another goalscorer? Probably. They probably needed to offload a few as well,” Durham said.
“So I think he’s absolutely correct to call out the sporting directors.”
The comments have added to the debate over whether Manchester United invested wisely during the summer transfer window.
Manchester United Pressure Grows After Atletico Madrid Defeat
The 2-0 loss to Atletico Madrid has increased the pressure on Carrick and the club’s football leadership. United must now address their on-pitch performances while managing concerns over squad depth and recruitment.
Bruno Fernandes has also displayed his frustration amid Manchester United’s poor form, with uncertainty continuing to surround his future at Old Trafford.
Martinez’s comments have shifted attention away from the manager and onto those responsible for building the squad. His remarks point to growing concerns among senior players that Manchester United missed the chance to strengthen the squad after last season’s progress.
The defender’s contract situation has also attracted attention, with reports indicating he has entered the final year of his deal. However, the central issue after the Atletico Madrid defeat remains United’s squad construction.
Manchester United have yet to demonstrate that their summer recruitment has addressed the weaknesses exposed against stronger opponents.
With senior players reportedly sharing Martinez’s concerns, Wilcox and the wider hierarchy face growing questions about their transfer decisions. The club’s response in the coming fixtures will be important as United attempt to improve results and restore confidence in their long-term plans.
