The Democratic Alliance and its policies were slammed as racist on Thursday, during IOL’s town hall debate.
Opposition parties claimed that even national policies, like Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment, have been twisted to exclude black and coloured people in the Cape.
Gericke slams DA’s tender policies
EFF Mayoral candidate Virgill Gericke lambasted the DA’s policies and said they were based on race and colour.
Gericke said: “Their BEE policies, the employment equity policies, the preferential procurement, tender policies, and so on are all made to be against black and coloured people.”
He said the DA-led City of Cape Town has written in their tender criteria that a colored or a black contractor can not apply.
Gericke said: “And so they create barriers in terms of the Municipal Finance Management Act, keeping people outside. I see this all the time. And no one is picking that up, unless you study that Municipal Finance Management Act.
“We must boot out the DA so that we have proper governance, so that we deliver the houses for people.
“Decent houses are standing there for normal ordinary citizens. Now you tell me, why does a poor person in the Western Cape, only because he's poor, need to stay in a small little house, overcrowded and densely populated.”
Adams challenges DA over housing list
National Coloured Congress leader and MP, Fadiel Adams, said the DA was indeed a racist party.
The firebrand said: “They do not want black people living close to white people. That is why they are pushing them far away from the City. They would rather build a wall along the N2 so that they can hide the people who are living in squalor.
"I would like to challenge the deputy mayor to show us the housing list from 1995 and explain to us why coloured people have disappeared from that list. Housing projects in Delft and Khayelitsha have been cancelled because of the race card.”
