With the US midterm elections approaching, federal authorities are warning election officials and political organizations to watch out for digital threats, such as convincing scam messages created with the help of AI. The FBI and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) issued an alert on Friday (October 16, 2026) that hackers could use AI to make fraudulent emails and text messages harder to identify.
The messages could be designed to steal passwords, obtain sensitive information, or gain access to accounts used by election officials and campaign teams. The warning comes ahead of November’s midterm elections, when political organizations and election offices are likely to face increased scrutiny and cyber activity.
AI Could Make Phishing Messages More Convincing
AI tools are making it easier for criminals to produce messages that look polished and sound believable. Fraudulent emails can imitate the language of official communications, while text messages may appear to come from a trusted colleague or service provider.
According to the federal alert, hackers could use these tools to sharpen their attempts to deceive election officials, candidates, and political organizations. A convincing message may encourage a recipient to click a malicious link, disclose login credentials or share information that should remain private. The concern is how quickly attackers can produce tailored messages for different targets.

Election Offices and Campaigns Face Risks
Election officials manage sensitive information and depend on digital systems to coordinate their work. Political campaigns also handle voter data, internal communications, and account credentials, which make them attractive targets for cybercriminals.
A compromised email account could expose private correspondence or give an attacker an opportunity to send further fraudulent messages from a trusted address. Such incidents could disrupt operations and create confusion during a sensitive period.
The alert highlights the need for election offices and campaign teams to treat unexpected requests for passwords or confidential information with caution, even when a message appears legitimate.
The warning does not mean that the election process itself has been compromised. Instead, it reflects concern that AI could make familiar cyberattacks more effective at a time when political organizations are particularly exposed.
