Overview:
Soulslike games combine stamina-based combat, challenging bosses and exploration to create rewarding gameplay experiences.
Elden Ring, Lies of P and Black Myth: Wukong show how the genre has expanded beyond its FromSoftware roots.
Strong player communities, replay options and skill-based challenges continue to drive the genre's popularity and commercial growth.
A video game that punishes players for small mistakes should not sell tens of millions of copies. Yet Soulslike games do exactly that, year after year.
This genre started as a niche project from a small Japanese studio. It has since grown into one of gaming's most profitable categories. Steam listed 371 games tagged 'souls-like' in 2024 alone, up 41% from the year before. That growth tells a story about what players actually want from their games right now.
Where the Genre Began
FromSoftware built the foundation for this style under director Hidetaka Miyazaki. Demon's Souls launched in 2009 and introduced ideas nobody else was trying at the time. Dark Souls followed in 2011 and turned those ideas into a worldwide phenomenon. Bloodborne arrived in 2015 with a gothic horror setting, and fans soon began calling the whole family 'Soulsborne.'
Core Traits Every Soulslike Shares
A few design choices appear across nearly every game in this category.
Death counts as part of the journey, not a game-ending failure
Players lose currency on defeat unless they recover it in time
Checkpoints restore health but also reset nearby enemies
Combat relies on stamina, patience, and careful timing
Story details come from item descriptions, not lengthy cutscenes
Elden Ring took this formula and placed it inside a massive open world in 2022. The game has reportedly sold more than 40 million copies since launch. Average playtime sits around 122 hours, and nearly 93% of player reviews remain positive.
Why Players Keep Choosing Difficulty
Most games try to smooth out every rough edge for the player. Soulslike games do the opposite, and somehow that choice keeps people hooked.
A Win that Actually Feels Earned
Beating a boss after ten failed attempts means something a scripted cutscene victory never could. Players remember the fight itself, not just the ending. That memory keeps them talking about the game long after they finish it, through forums, videos, and shared tips.
Rules that Feel Fair, Even When Brutal
Enemy attacks in these games almost always telegraph their movements clearly. A careful player can learn the pattern and avoid damage entirely. Losing usually comes down to a player's own timing mistake, not bad luck. That kind of fairness builds real trust between the game and the person holding the controller.
Less Guidance, More Respect
Soulslike games skip the constant tutorials and glowing waypoints found in many modern titles. Players piece together the world's history from scattered notes and cryptic dialogue. This approach treats the audience as capable adults, and many players reward that trust with years of loyalty.

A Genre that Keeps Growing Past FromSoftware
Other studios have taken this formula and run with it. Lies of P, Lords of the Fallen, and Nioh each built strong followings of their own. Black Myth: Wukong reportedly crossed 20 million copies sold on Steam within its first year. Hollow Knight: Silksong, a side-scrolling cousin to the genre, reached close to 7.8 million downloads.
The business side tells an interesting story too. Developers based in the Asia-Pacific region produced 80% of souls-like projects and earned roughly 97% of genre revenue in 2025. Japanese publishers, especially Bandai Namco and FromSoftware, still lead the pack in sales. At the same time, independent developers worldwide now drive most of the growth in new project launches, even as big studios keep the largest revenue share.
Most major releases price between USD 39.99 and USD 69.99, matching standard AAA titles. Players clearly accept full pricing for games built around frustration and failure, which says something about how much value they place on the experience.
What Keeps the Audience Coming Back
A handful of reasons explain why this genre holds onto players so well.
New Game Plus modes let players replay with fresh challenges and builds
Online message systems turn solo struggles into shared community puzzles
Distinct art direction gives each world a unique, memorable atmosphere
Boss fights work like individual puzzles, often the most praised part of any entry
Action RPG fans especially gravitate toward this mix. It blends traditional character growth with combat that demands real skill and attention.
Why Soulslikes are Here to Stay
Soulslike games succeed by asking for more effort and delivering greater satisfaction in return. The difficulty is not there for shock value. It shapes a system where every victory feels personal and every new area feels like a real discovery. That formula, proven first by Demon's Souls, has only gotten stronger over time.
Sales figures back up what players have said for years through word of mouth. Tens of millions of units sold, hundreds of fresh titles each year, and consistently strong review scores point to a genre built on real substance. As more studios across different countries experiment with these ideas, Soulslike games look set to stay a major force in gaming for a long time.

FAQs
1. What exactly defines a Soulslike game?
A Soulslike game features tough combat, death as part of progress, a currency lost on defeat, and checkpoint-based rest points. Story details come through items and environment rather than direct dialogue or lengthy cutscenes.
