The United States Mission in Saudi Arabia has warned of possible fresh attacks on major airports in Riyadh and Dammam, urging travellers to exercise extreme caution amid the risk of further security incidents and disruptions to air travel.
The warning was contained in a security alert dated October 11, 2026, and published on the mission’s X account on Monday. The mission said it was aware of additional attacks on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh and a targeted attack on King Fahd International Airport in Dammam on Sunday.
“Please take extreme caution when using all major airports in Saudi Arabia,” the mission said, urging US citizens to prepare for possible flight cancellations, airspace closures and other travel disruptions.
It advised travellers to confirm their flight status directly with their airlines and the airports before embarking on their journeys, warning that the security situation could affect travel arrangements.
The mission also recommended alternative means of transportation for travellers who might be affected by disruptions to airport operations. It listed private cars, trains and buses as possible options, while advising passengers to confirm availability and schedules with service providers.
Among the alternatives identified were Saudi Arabia Railways, SAT Transportation and the Saudi Public Transport Company (SAPTCO). The advisory indicated that travellers should consider their options carefully as security concerns persist around the affected airports.
Restrictions placed on US government personnel
The security alert also outlined restrictions on US government employees working in Saudi Arabia. According to the mission, personnel require special authorisation to use King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, as well as airports in Jeddah and Dammam.
The employees were also prohibited from travelling within 20 miles of the Saudi-Yemen border because of security risks. Special authorisation was equally required for travel to Jizan, Asir and Najran provinces, as well as the cities of Qatif, Yanbu and Taif.
Despite the restrictions, the mission said regular and emergency consular services remained available to US citizens in the country, indicating that assistance would continue amid the heightened security situation.
Deadly attacks raise security concerns
The latest warning followed deadly attacks on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh on Saturday, October 10. Saudi officials said the incident killed 12 people and injured more than 300 others, according to the report.
A further attack on Sunday reportedly killed one person and injured 11 others, Reuters reported. The incidents disrupted airport operations and prompted additional security warnings and travel restrictions.
The successive attacks have heightened concerns about the safety of air travel in Saudi Arabia, with the US mission urging travellers to remain vigilant, monitor developments and follow official guidance while making travel arrangements.
