Psychotic disorders from cannabis use have skyrocketed in Victoria, according to alarming new Monash University research.
Between 2013 and 2023, the rates of hospital admissions caused by cannabis and characterised by “severe mental health harms” rose a staggering 49 per cent.
Over the 10-year period, researchers analysed the data of more than 40,000 cannabis-related hospital arrivals across Victorian private and public hospitals. They found more than two-thirds of them resulted in hospital stays lasting multiple days.
Shockingly, more than 1500 admissions required transfer into intensive care.
Lead researcher Myfanwy Graham said there had been a “significant rise” in hospital admissions, specifically for women and girls.
“We’re seeing more people admitted to hospital with cannabis-related health problems, particularly severe mental health harms,” Ms Graham said.
“Unlike emergency department visits, hospital admissions generally involve more serious or complex cases where patients need additional treatment or monitoring.
“The significant rise in hospitalisations among women and girls is particularly concerning and highlights the urgent need for targeted, public health campaigns and earlier intervention strategies.”
Men and boys between the ages of 15-24 continue to be the highest overall demographic tied to cannabis-related hospitalisation.
Cannabis-related admissions peaked significantly during the Covid-19 pandemic, as large portions of the Victorian population were forced to undergo significant periods of time in lockdown.
