Government websites across Europe and other regions suspended operations on Wednesday after authorities identified serious security vulnerabilities in PHP, raising concerns about potential cyberattacks targeting websites and their databases.
The alert first emerged on Tuesday, when developers responsible for PHP, one of the world’s most widely used programming languages, disclosed two critical vulnerabilities and began working on an updated version to address the problem.
However, a broader security alert followed on Wednesday, despite the release of a version considered more secure. Reports suggested that some websites could not easily apply the necessary fixes, while hacker groups were allegedly coordinating efforts to exploit the vulnerabilities.
Attackers could potentially gain access to website administration systems, deface pages, steal large databases or use compromised websites to launch wider cyberattacks against infrastructure.
Cybersecurity authorities and some government leaders in Europe, the United Kingdom, Japan and Australia urged PHP users to take immediate precautions, including temporarily disabling websites that relied on vulnerable versions of the software.
Several countries, including the Netherlands and Finland, reportedly took websites offline, while French authorities announced that vulnerable websites had entered maintenance mode.
PHP and WordPress underpin much of the internet
PHP is an open-source programming language that powers approximately 75% of websites for which the underlying technology can be identified.
It also underpins WordPress, the world’s most widely used content management system, which supports around 43% of all websites. These range from personal blogs and small business websites to government services, news platforms and online shops.
A report by The Wall Street Journal said artificial intelligence helped researchers identify the vulnerabilities, described as the most significant to emerge in PHP in more than a decade.
The White House reportedly linked the discovery to the importance of US leadership in superintelligence, adding that it had known about the security issue since the previous Friday.
