Teenage boy rescued from Brisbane stormwater drain

Firefighters have rescued a teenager from the "maze" of stormwater drains under Brisbane.

Emergency services received reports that the boy was caught in the underground waterway system in the Kangaroo Point area about 2pm on Sunday.

It took five firefighting crews about half an hour to find the boy, who was with his brother. The other boy did not need to be rescued.

Queensland Fire Department station officer Clint Pilon said he was found about 20 metres from the entrance of a stormwater drain and fire crews were able to bring him to safety on an inflatable rescue boat in a "pretty smooth" rescue.

He said the teenager was uninjured and did not need to be taken to hospital.

Mr Pilon said that "playing in stormwater drains" was never a good idea, particularly after a bit of rain.

"The stormwater drains venture ... all over the city. It's like a little maze and they exit throughout the whole river," he explained.

He described the rescue as a positive outcome.
