An ABC News reporter found himself at the centre of a life-or-death rescue while covering Australia's flooding crisis near Brisbane, and footage of the moment has since gripped social media users worldwide.
Will Murray had been deployed to report on the floods when a driver's car stalled in rapidly rising water and began to sink. Rather than continue filming, Murray and a nearby bystander sprinted into the floodwater to reach the trapped driver.
Reporter becomes the story
The footage, captured by a bystander's camera in what appears to be a waterlogged parking area with roadway markers visible in the background, shows the vehicle already partially submerged as the rescuers wade in. On-screen captions overlaid on the clip chart the urgency of the moment, from the truck disappearing into the water to the driver being pulled free just in time.
The sequence is tense from the opening frames. The car sinks steadily as Murray closes the distance, and the rescue comes with little time to spare before the vehicle goes completely under.
