He turned 74 the following day, Sunday, October18, and wasted no time making the most of the country's scenery.
What did Ractliff say about his Zimbabwe trip?
The INEOS founder kicked off his visit at Victoria Falls, where he took to the greens at the Elephant Hills Golf Course, though not without incident.
In a video shared by ZBC News Online, he laughed off a wayward shot, saying:
"It's my birthday today and we've chosen Zimbabwe and it has been glorious, the people have been lovely, the weather fantastic apart from one tree that I hit with my golfball. The morning has been beautiful... We'll have a glorious week I'm sure."
Beyond the fairways, Ratcliffe's schedule featured some of southern Africa's most celebrated wildlife destinations.
He visited both Hwange National Park and Mana Pools National Park, and also made his way to Troutbeck Resort in the Nyanga highlands for more golf.
The billionaire revealed that this was not his first time experiencing the Mana Pools area.
He disclosed that he had previously paddled the Mana Canoe Trail along the Zambezi River on two separate occasions, covering roughly 80 to 100 kilometres each time.
Ratcliffe was generous with his praise for the country, highlighting the warmth of locals, the quality of wildlife encounters and even the coffee as standout features of his stay.
He rated the overall experience a perfect 10 out of 10 and described Zimbabwe as very safe, comments that Zimbabwean tourism officials quickly seized on to bolster the country's international profile.
For a man who oversees one of the most scrutinised football clubs in the world, the Zimbabwean getaway offered a rare moment of relaxed celebration far from the headlines of Old Trafford.
