BATU PAHAT: A single mother was fined RM1,000 by the magistrate's court here today for lodging a false police report claiming she had been robbed to avoid paying the fee to replace her lost MyKad.
Magistrate Mustaqim Sukarno imposed the fine on Keranjeet Kaur Shivinder, 41, after she pleaded guilty. She paid the fine, in default of which she would have faced five months' jail.
Keranjeet, a mother of two, was charged with falsely claiming that two men on a motorcycle had snatched her handbag in Kampung Jorak Elahi, Bukit Pasir, on Sept 12.
She lodged the report at the Cyberjaya police station in Sepang, Selangor, at 12.37pm on Sept 15.
She was charged under Section 182 of the Penal Code, which provides for a jail term of up to six months, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both, upon conviction.
In her report, Keranjeet claimed the incident occurred at 11.20pm on Sept 12, with her handbag containing her identity card, bank cards, house keys and RM210 in cash.
Police opened an investigation but, during questioning on Sept 18, she admitted that the robbery had never taken place.
She said she had fabricated the incident because she had misplaced her identity card and wanted to obtain a replacement without paying the required fee.
Deputy public prosecutor Nur Shahzleen Ibrahim prosecuted, while Keranjeet was represented by Normaahani Rais of the National Legal Aid Foundation.
