(ANSA) - ROME, 21 OTT - Some 1,339 individuals have been identified and 71 reported to authorities over road blockades by truckers protesting rising fuel prices that have brought much of southern Italy to a standstill amid food and fuel shortages, the interior ministry said Wednesday.
It is understood that the Ministry of the Interior has launched a sweeping operation to identify those carrying out "illegal road blockades that obstruct traffic, particularly in the Campania region." Hundreds of individuals have already been checked: 1,339 have been identified, 71 have been reported to the authorities, and 242 have faced administrative fines.
Furthermore, overnight, the Interior Ministry arranged for police escorts for numerous transport vehicles—500 in the Campania region alone—ensuring that loading and unloading operations could proceed as planned.
This evening, Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi convened a meeting via conference call with the prefects and police commissioners of the affected provinces, urging them to remain highly vigilant regarding the potential for criminal infiltration. (ANSA).
