The Lagos State Government has announced traffic diversions on the Independence Bridge in Lagos Island ahead of urgent asphalt repairs scheduled to begin on Friday, October 16.
The repair works, being undertaken by the Federal Ministry of Works, will start at night on Friday and continue through Saturday, October 17, and Sunday, October 18, 2026.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Oluwaseun, said the repairs would affect both the inbound and outbound lanes, with measures introduced to reduce disruption to motorists.
The statement said: “The Lagos State Government wishes to inform the public that traffic will be diverted on the Independence Bridge in Lagos Island as the Federal Ministry of Works commences urgent repairs of the bridge.”
According to the government, sections of the bridge will be partially closed one at a time, while one lane will remain open to allow vehicles to pass.
Motorists have been advised to plan their journeys ahead of the repairs and consider alternative routes to avoid delays.
The statement added: “Motorists are urged to plan their movement and make use of alternative routes to connect their desired destinations for the duration of the repairs.”
To manage traffic around the affected sections, officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) will be deployed to direct motorists and minimise congestion throughout the repair period.
