No matter how many times we’ve seen bloomers in the streets, a tailored trouser envisioned by every designer across fashion weeks the world over, and celebrities trying out the skant—the truth is, jeans remain the enduring, trend-transcending icon of any closet. But this fall, we’re taking it to ground level: you might have mastered your perfect denim, but what about the shoes to go with?
Comfortable, effortlessly chic, and with a classic air that couldn’t possibly go out to style, we’re making the case for the brown ballerina shoe as this season’s all-rounder. While the adidas Samba and back-to-school loafers dominated our shoe rotation for some time, it’s really been the year of the ballet flat—from sporty sneakerinas and Miu Miu’s technical iterations, to the sleek adidas Taekwondo, patent and Parisian double strap types, and platform stompers. All shades of brown have also been a part of 2025’s color story, from deep chocolate to sandy tones. When it comes to dark neutrals, brown has historically taken a back seat to hues like navy, black, or gray. But years of opting for other colors has actually played a major part in the comeback of brown. Designers like Chloé and Bottega Veneta have used the earthy color as a way to contrast sexy silhouettes or ground feminine pieces. And so, the stage for the brown ballerina is set.
Kate Middleton—Catherine, Princess of Wales—is a fan of earth-toned ballet flats, pairing them with her tailored pants for an elegant, versatile look. Katie Holmes has been spotted more than once in a textured, woven pair from the super affordable Dune, which she has styled with dark gray straight leg jeans, a cosy gray rollneck sweater, and thick black socks. Didn’t think these shoes would suit some tubing? Holmes is here to prove you wrong, with a styling tip that keeps this combo going into winter. Right now, I personally love wearing the Sport Jean (also loved by Zoë Kravitz) from Still Here in milk white with the Le Monde Béryl Luna Slipper in a dark espresso shade for some contrast.
Because of the ballerina’s soft and elegant shape, it makes for a shoe that can suit all types of denim silhouette. They look good with barrel jeans, wide-leg and flared bottoms, ’00s skinnies, and cropped capri styles. You can find a version to suit your own personal style: whether you’re into the refined and chic T-bar, a ladylike heeled number, or an It girl fave in perforated leather. And the best part? These shoes are very easy to find: Look to Alaïa, Gucci, and Miu Miu for modern takes, or count on Repetto and Margaux for more classic shapes. These and more of our favorites for fall, below.
