Responding to remarks made by Serbian-Russian Movement leader Slobodan Dimitrijevic at a Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) rally on October 11, the embassy described attempts to frame Russian aggression as a fight for shared spiritual and historical values as a cynical manipulation to win over voters.
“Attempts to portray the Russian Federation’s unprovoked aggression - which has claimed tens of thousands of lives and caused the suffering of millions - as a battle for spiritual and historical values shared with the Serbian people are a cynical manipulation aimed at gaining electoral support by exploiting sensitive societal issues,” the embassy stated.
The embassy noted that such rhetoric directly contradicts the Serbian leadership’s official stance regarding respect for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
It added that it expects political candidates to refrain from using the war in Ukraine in their campaigns, warning of the potential negative impact such rhetoric could have on Ukrainian-Serbian relations.
