Microsoft is giving Xbox Cloud Gaming users a way to stream games without a Game Pass subscription. Now rolling out in preview to Xbox Insiders, new "Cloud Playtime" packs introduce a prepaid, pay-as-you-go option that lets players purchase streaming time as needed. Microsoft is targeting a broader public rollout in November, with introductory pricing starting at $3.99 for 10 hours of cloud gaming.
For now, players without a Game Pass subscription can choose from three playtime allotments. The entry-level tier provides 10 hours for $3.99, which breaks down to roughly 40 cents per streaming hour. Stepping up to the mid-tier bundle nets 25 hours for $7.99 (around 32 cents an hour), while the top package delivers 50 hours for $11.99, reducing the effective rate to roughly 24 cents per hour. Crucially, Microsoft notes that unused hours don't expire at the end of a monthly billing cycle.
"Cloud playtime packs provide an ad-free cloud gaming experience, including shorter wait times, high-quality streaming, and playtime that remains available until it’s used," Microsoft states in a blog post.
These are all ad-free tiers. For those willing to put up with ads, Xbox Insiders can still kick the tires without paying a dime.
There is, however, an important distinction between paying for cloud game streaming and paying for game access. Purchasing a Cloud Playtime pack does not unlock Microsoft's expansive Game Pass catalog. Instead, the prepaid hours allow users to access cloud streaming for free-to-play titles or games they already own in their Xbox library, provided those titles support cloud play. In that sense, it's akin to NVIDIA's GeForce NOW service, which recently added 4X Frame Generation with full DLSS 4.5 controls.
These new hourly options follow Microsoft's decision late this summer to impose monthly caps. At the time, Microsoft cited the increasing cost of maintaining its server infrastructure as the service attracts more people who "play for longer."
Whether the hourly allotments prove popular remains to be seen. For casual gamers or travelers who only want to dip into an owned title on a laptop, tablet, or phone without ponying up for a $22.99 monthly Game Pass Ultimate subscription, the math on the larger bundles is fairly reasonable, especially since the unused time doesn't simply vanish at the end of the month. However, it's not yet clear if gamers will ultimately tolerate an hourly meter running in the background while playing titles they already purchased. Tracking time kind of sucks the joy out of what's supposed to be a relaxing pastime.
