A bright orange ray of sunshine visited Down Syndrome WA on Friday transforming the room into pure, unfiltered magic.
Little hands shot into the air and fingers began pointing with excitement as toddlers and children sudden realised who had walked through the door — iconic children’s entertainer and former Wiggle Emma Memma.
For kids living with Down syndrome, who often face daily developmental and medical hurdles, the special visitor — who is in town for Telethon Weekend — wasn’t just a performer, she was a beacon of familiar warmth.
With Emma Memma leading, the children, parents and support teams sang along to classics like The Wheels on the Bus, complete with enthusiastic hand gestures and Auslan signing.
“When you’re singing a song that everybody knows, instantly everyone binds together,” Emma said.
“You can see that the children actually connect not just with their parent or their carer, but then they connect with each other because they know that song and that’s really important.”
For the mothers watching on, the morning brought on happy tears.
Amanda Bright watched on as her daughter Taya beamed with overwhelming joy.
“It’s magic,” she said emotionally.
“I think the joy that our kids can experience is next level... they feel their emotions really strongly in a way that you or I probably don’t, and it’s special because it helps remind us that there is actually that level of joy in real everyday things.”
After a rough couple of months for the Bright family, whose daughter faces challenges that neurotypical children never encounter, the simplicity of a happy day was deeply refreshing.
“She deserves some fun that she doesn’t always get... we are super grateful,” she said.
“Opportunities that Telethon has provided her through DSWA are really special, and we do not take them for granted.”
Also taking center stage was five-year-old Theo Te Moana, a fiery, highly social little boy whose mother Claire affectionately describes as a “real-life minion.”
Theo, who has Emma’s songs mixed right alongside Gwen Stefani and Nelly on his personal Spotify playlist, didn’t hesitate for a second to plant himself right on his hero’s lap.
“The minute that he saw Emma, he just wanted to be a part of it,” she said.
“Things like this are amazing, especially as a group, as a community of Down syndrome families... to do something like this where there is no resistance... it’s definitely filled his cup, and then filled my cup watching him.”
For Emma Memma, visiting community beneficiary organisations like DSWA right before Perth’s annual Telethon weekend reinforces the exact reason she launched her project.
“You meet children like this, and they stay with you. You don’t forget it,” she said.
“When you meet people and they are connecting and they tell you to not stop, then you’re like, ‘Okay, then I can’t.’ It’s almost like a promise that you have to keep doing it.”
Reflecting on the overarching impact of Telethon across Western Australia, Emma emphasised how special it is to witness funds turning into tangible community support.
“When you see the chain effect, when people are coming together to raise money, to raise awareness, and then it actually is put into practice, I think that’s where you see the value in people coming together,” she said.
“My heart is so warm after being with them.”
After plenty of hugs every single child lined up to snap an individual photo with Emma — leaving families with memories and pure joy that will last far beyond the Telethon weekend.
