For 25 years, while Fleetwood Mac toured the world and its music reached millions of listeners, Christine McVie found a quieter place to call home in the English countryside. The late singer, songwriter and keyboardist made The Quaives, a historic estate in Wickhambreaux, Kent, her home in 1990, transforming it into a private retreat where she could garden, unwind and continue making music away from the spotlight.
Now, the approximately 20-acre property is back on the market for £3 million. Country Life reported the listing in October 2026, describing the Grade II-listed estate as a 17th-century property that benefited from McVie's restoration work.
A country retreat away from the spotlight
McVie, who joined Fleetwood Mac in 1970, spent decades performing with one of rock music's most successful bands. By 1990, she had spent years travelling between recording studios, hotels and concert venues.
The Quaives offered a different pace of life, with gardens, woodland and open countryside replacing the constant movement of touring. Located in the village of Wickhambreaux near Canterbury, the estate became McVie's home from 1990 until 2015.
According to Mansion Global, which reported on the property's latest listing on October 7, 2026, she renovated the centuries-old estate during her ownership and used it as both a personal retreat and a place to work.
The property was not simply a celebrity residence that she occupied briefly between tours. Its combination of privacy, outdoor space and historic buildings allowed McVie to establish a life away from the music industry while retaining a place to create music. The estate's current listing describes a property that combines a historic main house with cottages and several outbuildings. The main residence dates to the late 17th century and covers more than 6,000 square feet across three floors.
It has seven bedrooms and retains period features such as Dutch gables, exposed timber beams, panelled walls, casement windows and fireplaces. One of the most distinctive details of The Quaives is its connection to McVie's music. During her time away from Fleetwood Mac, she continued working on her own material, using the privacy of the estate to develop her solo career. In 2004, she released In the Meantime, her third solo studio album.
The record was made in a converted barn on the property, according to Mansion Global and The Times. The outbuilding offered a more private working environment than a conventional recording studio, allowing McVie to create music close to home. The estate also has a cottage named Songbird Cottage, after one of her best-known compositions. During McVie's ownership, she reportedly kept her records and awards there.
The cottage is among three additional cottages on the property, which give the estate a character beyond that of a conventional country house.McVie left Fleetwood Mac in 1998 and largely retreated from public life. She returned to the band in 2014, reuniting with her bandmates for another chapter in its long career. Around this period, she increasingly spent time in London and eventually left the Kent estate. The Quaives was put on the market in 2015 for £3.5 million, according to contemporary and subsequent property reports.
The current £3 million asking price therefore follows an earlier attempt to sell the same property, rather than representing its first appearance on the market.
Inside the historic estate
The main house combines traditional country-house architecture with spaces designed for family life and entertaining. Its reception rooms include a drawing room opening onto a south-facing terrace, a sitting room, a family room and a formal dining room.
The kitchen and adjoining family living space feature a central island and a traditional Aga range cooker. Beyond the main residence, the estate includes three cottages, a kitchen barn and other outbuildings.
One timber barn has since been converted into a yoga and wellness studio, while another includes a kitchen and bar. The property also has formal gardens, paddocks, woodland, a lake, a kitchen garden, a greenhouse and an all-weather tennis court with a pavilion. The combination of buildings and grounds is part of what distinguishes The Quaives from a standard country home. Its existing structures have been adapted for different uses over time, reflecting both McVie's years there and the priorities of the owners who followed her.The estate is now operated as a retreat and events venue by its current owners, an architect and a yoga teacher. Its official website describes a 19-acre property with private cottages, landscaped gardens, winding paths and facilities for retreats and celebrations.
The slight difference between the website's 19-acre figure and the approximately 20 acres cited in recent media reports appears to reflect rounding.
A property with a musical legacy
McVie died in November 2022, aged 79. Her songwriting helped define Fleetwood Mac's sound, with credits on some of the group's best-known songs, including Don't Stop, You Make Loving Fun, Everywhere and Little Lies. The Quaives preserves a different part of her story: the years she spent balancing a global music career with a quieter life in the English countryside.
The barn where she recorded In the Meantime, the cottage named Songbird and the extensive grounds all connect the property to her time there. The current listing agent, Mellony Morgan of Harding Green, told Mansion Global that the estate had already attracted interest from buyers in London and overseas, including people from the music industry. She highlighted the property's privacy, space and range of buildings as qualities that could appeal beyond its association with McVie.
