CoreWeave shares fell by as much as 16% on October 14, 2026, after yields on the AI infrastructure provider’s bonds climbed toward 15%.
The selloff in CoreWeave (NASDAQ: CRWV) took the stock to an intraday low somewhere near $65 to $68. The trigger was the bond market, which has started asking an uncomfortable question about debt-funded AI buildouts: can these companies actually afford the money they’ve borrowed?
The bonds blinked first
CoreWeave’s 9.625% senior unsecured notes due July 2032 hit a 15% yield intraday on October 13. They closed that session at 14.5%.
Its 9.75% notes due 2031 were trading at roughly 14.9%.
Those coupons were already high when the debt was issued. A yield sitting more than five percentage points above the coupon tells you the market has repriced CoreWeave’s credit meaningfully lower.
Equity investors watched the bond market wobble on Monday. On Tuesday, they headed for the exits.
Big backlog, bigger bills
CoreWeave has a contracted revenue backlog nearing $104 billion. Revenue in the second quarter of 2026 doubled to $2.58 billion.
The problem sits on the other side of the ledger. CoreWeave carries approximately $52 billion in debt obligations.
In Q2 2026, its interest expense came in at around $640 million. That figure was larger than the company’s adjusted operating income for the quarter.
CoreWeave has raised somewhere in the range of $30 to $35 billion in combined debt and equity capital during 2026 through various financing routes. A company that taps markets frequently is far more exposed to shifts in what those markets charge.
Influencers poured fuel on the fire
The selloff picked up momentum after commentary on social media from high-profile figures, including venture capitalist Chamath Palihapitiya and Tesla CEO Elon Musk.
The damage didn’t stay contained to one ticker. Oracle shares fell roughly 7% on the same day, while Nebius dropped about 9% to 10%.
Why the AI sector is watching CoreWeave’s debt
CoreWeave built its business by renting GPU-based computing power to companies training and running AI models. That requires enormous upfront spending on chips, data centers and power, with customer payments arriving over years.
The $104 billion backlog speaks to customer demand. The bond market just raised doubts about the financing side of the equation.
What this means
For equity holders, the core issue is refinancing risk. CoreWeave’s interest bill already exceeds its adjusted operating income, leaving limited room to absorb higher borrowing costs on future debt.
Oracle’s roughly 7% drop and Nebius’s slide of about 9% to 10% show how quickly sentiment can travel across a crowded trade.
There are a few things worth watching from here. The first is whether CoreWeave’s bond yields stabilize below the 15% mark or keep climbing. The second is CoreWeave’s next earnings report, specifically whether adjusted operating income starts to close the gap with the approximately $640 million quarterly interest expense. The third is how the company approaches its next round of financing, since any fresh debt issued at these levels would offer a real-time read on what lenders demand to keep funding the AI buildout.
