DAR ES SALAAM: MINISTER for Natural Resources and Tourism Ashatu Kijaji (pictured) has set April next year as the deadline for completing tourism development projects at Pugu–Kazimzumbwi Forest Reserve, with the facilities expected to begin operating ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals in June.
The minister has emphasised the timely completion of accommodation facilities, particularly the planned cottages, as well as the entrance gate and other visitor facilities needed to improve access and prepare the reserve to receive tourists before the tournament begins.
The deadline is part of Tanzania’s efforts to ensure that visitors coming for AFCON 2027 can explore the country’s natural attractions beyond football venues, while strengthening the tourism sector’s contribution to the benefits expected from the continental competition.
During an inspection of the projects at Pugu–Kazimzumbwi, Kijaji stressed the importance of developing tourism infrastructure and ensuring that attractions are ready to welcome both domestic and international visitors.
“We want visitors who come to Tanzania for AFCON 2027 to have the opportunity to experience our country’s natural attractions, including the beauty of Pugu–Kazimzumbwi,” she said.
The minister’s directive places the completion of accommodation and supporting infrastructure among the immediate priorities, with April 2027 providing a target for the facilities to be ready and begin receiving visitors before the AFCON finals in June.

According to Kijaji, the project’s three cottages were at different stages of development, with one completed, another nearing completion and construction of the third underway. The wider plan envisages seven cottages, alongside an entrance gate intended to improve access and create a welcoming entry point for visitors.
The projects are expected to strengthen Pugu-Kazimzumbwi’s capacity to accommodate tourists and expand its potential as a nature-based tourism destination within the Dar es Salaam area. Tanzania will co-host AFCON 2027 with Kenya and Uganda, creating an opportunity to showcase its tourism attractions to football fans and other international visitors expected in the region.
The government’s preparations therefore extend beyond sports infrastructure to include accommodation, transport, access roads and visitor services that can support tourism activities during the tournament.
