Google wants you to build your own Android app. It does not need everyone else to see it.
The company is making it easier to create and use personal Android apps with AI, without listing them publicly on the Play Store.
How the private app pipeline works
The foundation was announced on May 19, 2026, at Google I/O. Google introduced native Android app generation inside Google AI Studio, its web-based environment for working with AI models.
Users type what they want in plain language. The system then produces a Kotlin application built on Jetpack Compose.
For the non-developers: Kotlin is the main programming language for modern Android apps. Jetpack Compose is Google’s toolkit for building app screens. So these are real native Android apps, not web pages dressed up as apps.
Google describes the output as production-ready. Once an app is generated, users can try it in an emulator embedded in the browser. That works like a virtual phone running on your screen.
From there, there are two routes to a real device. You can install the app directly on a physical phone using USB and ADB, the Android Debug Bridge that developers use to push software to a handset.
The second route is where Google Play comes in. Users can publish the app to a Play internal testing track with minimal friction.
That track caps access at 100 testers. People join through a shareable link, and the app never becomes discoverable in public Play Store search.
The guardrails have not moved
Apps made this way still go through Play’s quality and policy reviews. That includes Google’s rules on generative AI content.
Publishing to Play still requires a Google Play Developer account. That carries a one-time fee of $25.
Google is pitching the feature at specific use cases. The focus is on personal utilities, apps that tap into phone hardware, and experiences built around Gemini, the company’s AI model family.
A shelf for your creations
Google also appears to be planning a home for these projects inside the Play Store. Recent APK teardowns, where researchers dig through app code for unreleased features, have reportedly surfaced references to a section called “Your creations.”
The apparent goal is to let users manage their privately built AI apps in one place. They would not have to expose those apps to the wider store.
Google has not formally launched that section. Code references sometimes ship, and sometimes they quietly vanish. For now it remains a strong hint, not a confirmed feature.
Google’s stated roadmap also includes better sharing tools and Firebase support. Firebase is Google’s backend platform for things like databases, logins, and analytics. The company says the review process will remain unchanged as those additions arrive.
Why Google is leaning into AI-written software
The move fits a larger shift inside Google itself. The company’s CEO has stated that AI now generates approximately 75% of new internal code.
That figure helps explain the strategy. If AI is already writing most of Google’s own new code, offering similar tools to the public is a logical next step.
“Vibe coding” is the informal term for this style of building. You describe what you want and let the model handle the syntax. Google is now tying it to a mainstream mobile distribution channel.
What this means for developers, users, and the app economy
The most immediate effect is a lower barrier to entry. People who could never write Kotlin can now produce something that runs natively on Android and share it with a small group.
For professional developers, rapid prototyping gets much faster, which could help teams test ideas before committing engineering time.
Google’s caution matters here. Keeping review standards intact and routing these apps through a 100-person internal track limits how fast AI-made software can flood the public store.
There are open questions too. Policy enforcement for AI-generated code at scale is untested. Security review of apps written by people who cannot read their own code is a real challenge.
The things to watch are clear enough. One is whether the “Your creations” section actually ships. Another is how quickly Firebase support and expanded sharing arrive. The third is whether Google eventually raises the 100-tester ceiling or opens a public lane for AI-built apps.
