Addis Ababa, October 12, 2026 (FMC) — House of Peoples’ Representatives (HPR) Speaker Ahmed Shide has described Ethiopia’s national flag as a symbol connecting generations through the sacrifices of the past, the patriotism of the present and the shared aspirations of the future.
Speaking at the opening of the 19th National Flag Day observance at the Parliament compound on Monday, Ahmed said the flag embodies values that strengthen patriotism and reinforce citizens’ commitment to the country’s progress.
The ceremony brought together President Taye Atske-Selassie, members of the Cabinet and senior government officials to honour the national flag as a symbol of Ethiopia’s identity, sovereignty and aspirations.
Ahmed noted that the House of Peoples’ Representatives has the legal mandate to lead preparations for and oversee the annual National Flag Day observance.
He stressed that the values represented by the flag must be reflected in citizens’ dedication to Ethiopia’s development and civilization. Patriotism, he said, requires a willingness to make sacrifices for the country and a wholehearted commitment to advancing its progress.
The Speaker also underscored the connection between Ethiopia’s diverse communities, noting that the country’s many languages and cultures are rooted in a shared history and common values. The national flag, he said, represents a nation whose unity is strengthened by its diversity and enriched by its differences.
He described the annual observance as an opportunity to renew solidarity among Ethiopia’s diverse communities and reinforce their shared commitment to the country’s collective advancement.
The ceremony began with an oath-taking led by Federal Supreme Court President Tewodros Mihret, followed by the raising of the national flag under the leadership of President Taye Atske-Selassie.
National Flag Day is observed annually on the first Monday of Tikimt, corresponding to October, in accordance with the national flag proclamation. Celebrations take place across regional states, city administrations, public institutions, educational centres and Ethiopian diplomatic missions abroad, promoting patriotism, national consensus and respect for the country’s sovereign symbol.
Ethiopia’s flag also carries a historic legacy associated with the country’s independence and its place in Africa’s struggle against colonialism, standing as a lasting emblem of sovereignty, dignity and national pride.
