Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — A bridge worth 310 billion soums is being built across the Karadarya River in Samarkand Region to connect the new Shirin residential district with Samarkand and its international airport. President Shavkat Mirziyoyev reviewed construction progress and the project’s technical solutions on 18 October, the presidential press service reported.
The bridge will be 780 metres long and 29.8 metres wide. Its roadway will have four lanes, with a projected capacity of up to 25,000 vehicles per day.
Once the bridge is operational, the distance between the Shirin district and central Samarkand will be reduced from 23 kilometres to four kilometres, while travel time is expected to fall by 30 minutes.
The structure is expected to help optimise traffic flows, improve road safety and ease congestion.
During the visit, Mirziyoyev was also briefed on options for managing traffic flows. He subsequently met with representatives of the local community.
The president noted the growth in tourist arrivals in Samarkand and emphasised the importance of transport infrastructure for the city’s development. He said sound project planning and efficient logistics would help reduce costs for residents and shorten travel times.
“After all, a city is for its people!” Mirziyoyev said, adding that the construction of the bridge had been one of his long-standing goals.
The president also urged citizens to work for the benefit of the country, pursue education and strive for new achievements. He emphasised the importance of national identity and responsibility to the people and the homeland.
