(ANSA) - ROME, 19 OTT - The March European Council summit is set to take place in the Italian capital to mark the 70th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Rome, which created the European Economic Community (EEC) and paved the way for the EU, sources said on Monday.
The idea to hold the March summit here as a one-off emerged during last week's European Council in Brussels, the sources said.
The EU's regulations say that member States' leaders must meet twice every six months in Brussels, but another venue can be chosen in exceptional circumstances if the 27 all agree.
A senior EU official confirmed to ANSA on Monday that the process for holding the March summit in Rome "is underway" and that Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever has given his approval. (ANSA).
