Real Madrid forward Vinícius Júnior has been handed a four-match suspension by the Spanish Football Federation’s disciplinary committee following his sending-off during the club’s La Liga encounter against Villarreal.
The Brazilian international will miss four crucial league fixtures against Sevilla, Barcelona, Racing Santander and Valencia, including the highly anticipated El Clásico against Barcelona on October 25.
The decision, announced on Wednesday, October 14, follows an incident during Real Madrid’s 1-0 victory over Villarreal at the Santiago Bernabéu on Saturday, October 10, when Vinícius was shown a straight red card after pulling the hair of Villarreal defender Nathan Saliba.
The disciplinary committee imposed a two-match suspension for the incident and an additional two matches for the forward’s aggressive protests following his dismissal, dealing a significant blow to Real Madrid ahead of a demanding period in their domestic campaign.
The punishment means head coach José Mourinho will be without one of his most influential attacking players for the next four league matches, including the meeting with defending champions Barcelona at the Spotify Camp Nou.
How the Villarreal incident unfolded
The controversy occurred during the second half of the encounter, after Vinícius had come on as a substitute and appeared to have scored what would have been another goal for Real Madrid.
However, a review by the video assistant referee (VAR) drew attention to an earlier incident in which the Brazilian had pulled Saliba’s hair.
Following the review, the referee disallowed the goal and showed Vinícius a straight red card for the offence.
The decision provoked an angry reaction from the forward, who protested vehemently before being restrained by teammates as he left the pitch.
According to the referee’s report, Vinícius pulled his opponent’s hair while the ball was in play but was not being contested directly between the two players. The report also described his subsequent reaction to the dismissal as aggressive.
Those details became central to the disciplinary proceedings, with the committee treating the hair-pulling incident and the forward’s conduct after the red card as separate grounds for punishment.
The incident overshadowed part of a match that Real Madrid ultimately won 1-0, but its consequences have extended beyond the final result, with the forward now set to miss some of the club’s most important upcoming league fixtures.
Why the disciplinary committee imposed four matches
The four-match suspension comprises two matches for the physical offence against Saliba and another two for Vinícius’s protests following his dismissal.
The disciplinary authorities considered the circumstances surrounding the hair-pulling incident, particularly the referee’s account that the players were not directly contesting possession when it occurred.
The additional punishment followed the description of Vinícius’s reaction after the red card, which the referee recorded as aggressive.
The decision has attracted considerable attention because it rules the Brazilian out of El Clásico, one of the most closely watched fixtures in world football.
Real Madrid had been expected to rely on his pace, dribbling and ability to create scoring opportunities in the encounter, making his absence a considerable setback for Mourinho.
The club was also reported to be considering an appeal against the punishment, although the four-match suspension had been announced as of Wednesday.
Matches Vinícius will miss
The suspension covers Real Madrid’s next four La Liga fixtures.
The first is the home encounter against Sevilla, followed by the away meeting with Barcelona on October 25. The Brazilian will then miss the league fixture against Racing Santander before sitting out the clash with Valencia.
His absence from El Clásico is particularly significant given the rivalry between Real Madrid and Barcelona and the importance of the match in the race for the Spanish league title.
Barcelona will have the opportunity to face Madrid without one of their principal attacking threats, while Mourinho must find an alternative to fill the gap left by the Brazilian.
Vinícius’s unavailability could also increase the responsibility on other members of Madrid’s attacking unit to provide goals and creativity during the suspension.
The forward is expected to become eligible again for domestic action after serving the four-match ban, with Real Madrid scheduled to face Celta Vigo following the November international break.
Champions League availability unaffected
Although the punishment rules Vinícius out of four domestic league matches, it does not automatically extend to European competition.
The Brazilian remains available for Real Madrid’s Champions League commitments, including Wednesday’s fixture against Roma.
This provides Mourinho with an opportunity to continue using the forward in Europe while adjusting his domestic line-up to cope with the suspension.
For Vinícius, the immediate challenge will be to return to action after the disciplinary setback and avoid further incidents that could result in additional sanctions.
The suspension also places renewed focus on discipline and player conduct, particularly in matches where VAR reviews and refereeing decisions generate intense reactions.
Real Madrid must now navigate four league fixtures without one of their key attackers, with the absence from El Clásico likely to remain the most consequential aspect of the ruling.
While the club considers its response to the decision, the suspension stands as a major development in the Spanish title race and a setback for a player whose influence on Madrid’s attacking play has made him central to the team’s ambitions.
